TransFormers: The Movie (US)
Released in 1987, this feature length animated film featured the death of most original series characters, including Optimus Prime, as the TransFormers found themselves fighting for survival against the world-eating Unicron. This movie introduced all-new characters as its main heroes and villians, and toys were later made of all save Unicron (although Unicron prototypes were made in Japan).
Despite the fact that it was marketed as a children's movie and had a PG rating, the film recieved criticism for containing one instance of profanity and several scenes of a violent nature. It was reported that the heavy metal soundtrack also disturbed some parents. Overall, however, the film garnered fair reviews, and has become a cult classic among TF fans. It should be noted that the film did very well on video after the instance of profanity was removed.

Update: As of July 19, 2004, there are rumors circulating the Internet that a live-action TF movie may be in the works by Dreamworks - one of the top special effects and production studios out there. The rumors also say that Steven Spielburg himself, one of the owners of Dreamworks, may be interested in directing the film if everything else falls in place. If true, this is fantastic news for the TF community!
